Chase didn’t give a crap about the lawyer and his exploratory garbage, but listening to Maggie ease this young girl’s mind was a whole other issue.

This young woman was obviously abused. He could tell the moment she’d approached the table. The eyes that wouldn’t look up, the way her body seemed to curl into itself. How could anyone do that to another person? And it was her father? How?

A father protected their little girl from the atrocities of the world—they weren’t supposed to be the atrocity.

“Do you have somewhere to go?” Maggie asked, pulling out her phone as she sifted through the paperwork in front of her.

“Not really.” The woman played with a string of her purse. “We have no other family and we’re not allowed to have friends.”

“Where’s your sister?”

“School.”

“Where’s your father?” The wheels in Maggie’s head were turning. He could practically hear the whine of the gears.

“Work.”

Maggie paused to take a picture of a document with her cell. “My family has a cabin in the dunes.”

The girl frowned. “Are there dunes in Chicago?”

“No, Michigan.”

“Oh.” Brandi’s smile slid down at the edges. “That’s nice, but I don’t have a way to get there.”

“You let me worry about that.” Maggie pointed at one of the spreadsheets, taking another picture. “Is this your home address?”

The girl nodded and actually looked at Maggie with lit eyes. Any disappointment was gone. “Are you really going to help us?”

“I’m going to do everything I can, but you need to do your part. Go home and grab what you can for you and your sister without getting caught. Money. Clothing. Keep it light. I’ll send someone to the house in one hour to pick you up. Gray Crown Vic.”

The way Maggie talked—the passion—she could talk a snowman into believing a space heater was in his best interest.

Thank God she was on the good side.

“You did a good job of getting us information.” Maggie patted the girl’s hand before slipping the papers back across the table. “I want you to keep the paperwork. He might notice these are missing. And keep the money. You’ll need this for your sister.”

Brandi took the envelope back. “Are you sure?”

“Yes. I’m sending someone to pick you up as soon as you leave, so make sure you move discretely and fast.”

“But what if my dad comes home for lunch?”

Maggie stopped. Blinked. “Does he do that often?”

“Sometimes.”

“Okay.” Maggie nodded, eyes narrowed. “I’ll make sure he doesn’t leave the car lot.”

“Thank you so much.” Brandi brushed away a tear sliding down her cheek. She stood up from the table at the same time Maggie did.

Maggie smiled at her. “You’re welcome.”

Brandi jumped at Maggie and engulfed her in a hug before heading out the front door.

After Brandi was gone, Maggie pulled out her cell phone and dialed. There was no hello, no pleasantries. “Are you all together? Good. Put me on speaker. We have an emergency. I need you to drop what you’re doing.” Her eyebrows arched and her voice got louder, sharper. “I don’t care, drop it all.
